Why Networking Is Your Secret Weapon in Business

Networking for small business

Let’s have an honest chat about something that I’ve used to grow my business – networking.

Before you roll your eyes thinking this is another lecture about LinkedIn connections, hear me out!

As someone who’s spent a fair few years on the business scene, I’ve learned that having impressive qualifications and technical skills isn’t enough anymore. The real game-changer is the meaningful connections you build along the way.

Business is constantly evolving. New standards, changing regulations, emerging technologies – and it’s a lot to keep up with. That’s where your network becomes invaluable. I’ve found that having a strong professional community means always having someone to bounce ideas off or get insights about the latest industry trends and I’m building up a pool of trusted advisors I can refer work onto.

But here’s the best part – networking doesn’t have to be this formal, scary thing. Some of my most valuable professional relationships started with casual conversations at industry events. I know first hand that walking into a room full of strangers can feel daunting (trust me, I’ve been there and happy to tell you the story of my first networking event over a coffee if you’re interested), but I’ve never regretted pushing myself out of my comfort zone. In fact, it was a bit of a game changer.

Here’s what works for me:

  1. Focus on quality over quantity.
Instead of trying to collect business cards like they’re Pokemon, I concentrate on having conversations with a few select people who share my interests.
  2. Stay engaged with the industry.
Regularly participate in online discussions, follow industry leaders on social media, and attend relevant conferences. It’s not just about staying informed – it’s about being part of the conversation.
  3. Make it personal.
Networking isn’t just about finding your next job opportunity. It’s about building relationships that can support your entire career journey.

If you’re looking to expand your own network lets start by connecting on LinkedIn. And if you’re in and around Glasgow/Edinburgh then maybe we can meet at an event.

What to remember is every business owner you admire started exactly where you are. So why not take that first step today?

What’s your experience with networking? I’d love to hear your thoughts!
